Dissection workshop – Back

Mon 28 Jun 2027 - Tue 29 Jun 2027 | Amsterdam

Put on your gloves for a unique dissection experience!

ContentLecturersPractical

We are delighted to announce an exclusive two-day back dissection workshop. This unique opportunity allows osteopaths to explore the complete architecture of the spine—from the neck to the pelvis—in great depth, using embalmed bodies (“fixed for life”), on which you will perform the dissections yourself in small, intensive groups. Dissect through the different layers all the way to the spinal cord, including the protective meninges and the exiting nerve roots.

This workshop offers an unparalleled learning experience under the guidance of experienced anatomists, who will lead you step by step through the dissection process. You will explore four crucial regions in detail:

  • Cervical: Including the suboccipital musculature and fascial layers.
  • Thoracic: With special attention to the relationships with the scapula.
  • Lumbar: The transition zone and stabilizers of the lower back.
  • Sacroiliac & Gluteal: The complex biomechanics of the pelvis and gluteal region.

This is your chance not just to study anatomy, but to experience it. Feel the texture of the tissues, observe the three-dimensional relationships, and directly connect your discoveries to daily clinical practice.

What to expect

  • Independent dissection in small groups for an intensive hands-on learning experience.
  • A complete three-dimensional understanding of the spine, spinal cord, and surrounding soft tissues.
  • Practical, directly applicable knowledge of four clinically essential anatomical zones.
  • Guidance from experienced anatomists.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an advanced three-dimensional understanding of the layered anatomy of four key regions: cervical, thoracic (including the scapula), lumbar, and sacroiliac/gluteal.
  • Independently expose and identify muscles, fascial layers, ligaments, blood vessels, and nerves of the back through practical dissection.
  • Understand the relationships between superficial and deep anatomical structures and their relevance to osteopathic assessment and treatment.
  • Locate the spinal cord, meninges, and spinal nerve roots in situ and understand their critical relationship with the vertebral column.
  • Distinguish clinically relevant anatomical variations from normal anatomy, thereby enhancing palpatory skills and supporting sound clinical decision-making.
