Does a high-velocity thrust manipulation of the cervicothoracic junction of the spine improve the range of motion of the shoulder?

Aim: The study investigated whether an osteopathic technique could influence the range motion of the shoulder.

Method: Using the neutral-0-method, measurements of 34 subjects were taken of the active passive mobility of flexion, external and internal rotation of the shoulder joints by inclinometer. Immediately after the high-velocity thrust manipulation of the cervicothoracic junction the mobility was measured a second time

Result: The statistical analysis showed a significant increase of the measured shoulder range motions (p<0.0001). The immediate post treatment results suggest that the manipulative technique associated with improved shoulder motion. Further studies could investigate the long term effects of the osteopathic treatment.
